Helmet Cams Getting Attention From the NY Times

Published on June 24, 2008 by david

New York Times helmet cams

We came across a brief but interesting clip on helmet cams produced by none other than the New Your Times.

The folks at NYT see “adventure-sports mavens” as enthusiastic consumers of the new generation of helmet cameras which were once prohibitively expensive but now feasible for even weekend adventurists.

As you know from reading our blog, recent advances in digital recorder and mini-cam durability and resolution are making YouTube the medium of choice for extreme sporters to share their adventures online. With some of these videos receiving hundreds of thousands of views.

The testing was done by NYT contributor James Bogner, a founder of the New York City Mountain Bike Association and an avid helmet-camera user. he tested three systems around his home in Long Island City, Queens, and in Highbridge Park, in Upper Manhattan.

Check out the video and the slides for the rest of the story.

Published on May 5, 2008 by david

If you love extreme sports, if you really love the thrills involved with pursuing any real adrenaline rush, you might have come to the conclusion that it is pretty difficult to really make those non-thrill seeking people that you know understand what it’s all about.

Those who don’t thrive on danger and thrill just don’t “get it,” do they?

What if you could educate those people? What if you could make them understand just a little bit better?

Think about how you could possibly express that feeling.

Extreme Sports Taking the World by Storm

Published on April 28, 2008 by david

Extreme sports are taking the world by storm these days. Rapidly growing in popularity, these adventures are becoming more and more extreme every day. Enthusiasts just can’t seem to stop themselves from seeking out more extreme adventures, looking for an even bigger adrenaline rush. Activities that used to be considered totally impossible are almost becoming commonplace. For example: Check out this video of extreme wingsuit base jumper Loic Jean Albert as he sails past a highway at 100+ mph!

Why Are Extreme Sports on the Rise?

Thrill-seekers are pushing the envelope more and more. Advances in travel, new technology in equipment, and the spread of information across the Internet means that more and more people are being exposed to these exciting adventures. Whether climbing up the sheerest mountain faces, bouncing through the roughest rapids, being chased by the wildest animals, or catching the highest possible air, extreme sports have begun to dominate younger generations. Entire competitions and television series are now devoted to many extreme adventures. Extreme sports equipment is also easier to find. Most general outdoor stores now carry full lines of mountain climbing gear, skateboarding supplies, or BMX needs. Gone are the days where you had to travel far to specialty stores to get what you need. Another exciting development in extreme sports equipment is the helmet camera. Now, using a helmet cam with a mini digital video recorder, you can actually make your own extreme sports videos to enjoy over and over.

Aim to Impress!

Just because everyone seems to be enjoying extreme sports these days doesn’t mean you can’t still aim to impress your buddies with your amazing exploits. You can still go to extremes and prove it, all you have to do is film your adventures. Get yourself a helmet cam and a mini digital video recorder. Then, just attach the helmet cam to your helmet, press the ‘start’ button on the DVR, tuck the recorder into a pocket, and get to your adventure. Recording yourself while performing your stunts is a sure way to take your extreme sport to the next exciting level. Once you record the video footage, using the completely safe and hands-free operation, you can download it to your computer’s hard drive. You can then make DVDs for yourself and your friends or upload the video to Youtube.com and become a star in your sport! Your friends and family will surely be impressed—hopefully you have a big screen television to watch it on…… The most aggressive, most adventurous extreme sports athletes are now recording their own videos, not only to show to others, but to really fine-tune their best moves and maneuvers. Watching yourself played back on the television, with the ability to pause and rewind, can offer you invaluable insight into how to make your sport even more incredible. A helmet cam with a mini digital video recorder is definitely the best way to go, if you plan on advancing your extreme sports skills. It’s the ideal way to have your own keepsake, share your experiences with others, and make yourself even better at what you do!

A Special Kind of Sport

Published on April 25, 2008 by admin

Traditional sports, such as basketball, baseball, or football involve a certain amount of athleticism, a level of competition, and a lot of specific training and skill.

Extreme sports take all those components, and involve an added amount of inherent danger or risk, probably some extra physical demands, perhaps some additional equipment, unpredictable environments or obstacles, and a whole lot of extra adrenaline.

These special sports allow enthusiasts to capture a feeling of excitement like no other.

bungee jumperThese special extreme sports really take a special kind of person. Your average soccer player or football player may not be looking for the same sort of excitement or conquest, theirs is a little different. While scoring a game-winning goal is a fantastic experience itself, some would say that it pales in comparison when compared to the adrenaline rush that you probably get from sky diving or bungee jumping.

Not Your Regular Sport….

Extreme sports enthusiasts have a new way to enjoy their adventures. Today’s helmet cams and bullet cams, the ones that come with mini digital video recorders (DVRs) allow anyone to create their very own extreme sports video.

Capture the entire adventure on video, start to finish. Using a helmet cam allows an extreme sports athlete completely hands-free operation, which is a definite necessity when you are participating in an extreme sport, especially one that may be quite dangerous.

Any distractions can be potentially disastrous, so any recording equipment you use really has to be hands-free and safe.

Prior to beginning your adventure, start your camera rolling, tuck the mini digital video recorder into your pocket, and begin your adventure. Whether you are the king of skateboarding or you are freefalling from 10,000 feet in the sky, you will have an amazing video that documents the entire event.

Share Your Adventure

When you record your own extreme sports videos, you get to show everyone you know exactly how exciting it is.

Using the built-in microphone, you can even narrate the whole episode, which adds a lot to the fun.

Once you record the video, you can download the footage from the SD card in the digital video recorder onto the hard drive of your PC. You can burn your very own DVDs and see them on your television, or you can email the videos to your soon-to-be-very-impressed friends and family.

Don’t forget how exciting it will be for you to watch those videos yourself, you may even be able to fine tune your moves and maneuvers, fix mistakes for next time, and take the next step in your extreme sport by seeing how it looks.

It definitely takes a special kind of person for these special sports. Get some special equipment, too, and make your own extreme sports videos. It’s never been easier or safer than with the newest helmet cams and mini DVRs that are now available!

What Makes A Sport Extreme?

Published on April 21, 2008 by admin

What exactly is an “extreme” sport, and why in the world would anyone want to try them?

Well, an extreme sport could be considered anything that provides the participant with that extra adrenaline rush, often from some added element of danger, whether it’s height, speed, or intensity.

Take biking, for an example. Typically, people get on a regular road bike or mountain bike, strap on their helmet and start riding. The extreme sports enthusiast would be likely to take this activity a step further, riding their mountain bike through varied and difficult terrain, or riding at speeds that most would consider at least scary, if not downright unsafe.

four sky diversRegular people ride in airplanes, extreme sports enthusiasts jump out of them. The rush of free falling for a full minute before pulling the ripcord and releasing a parachute is usually the draw for this activity.

Regular people may hike up a mountain, with a small backpack full of maps, snacks, and water. Extreme sports enthusiasts climb to the highest peaks, often requiring special grappling equipment, ropes, and crampons to keep them from falling off the side of the mountain.

Amazing Footage

Sure, regular people can record their “adventures,” if you want to call them that, using camcorders and showing people at their next party. The extreme sports enthusiast is usually the one who invests in cool gadgets, like helmet cams and mini personal digital video recorders, to film the amazing footage of their adventures.

Obviously, these videos are far more interesting than the ones of Uncle Charlie sitting and relaxing in his canoe with a fishing pole.

Recording Safely

Even the craziest extreme sports enthusiasts should be considering safety during their adventures.

Although these people may often seem reckless, there is a lot of thought, planning, and preparation that usually must accompany any extreme sport, because of the added element of danger. Using the wrong equipment, using worn equipment, or sometimes even one wrong or careless move, can mean the difference between success and catastrophe during an extreme sports adventure.

So, while a typical, old-fashioned camcorder setup can be fine for a regular “outdoorsman,” the extreme sports enthusiast should be investing in a helmet cam and mini digital video recorder, to ensure a fully hands-free operation while recording.

The mini DVR can be recording continuously, but tucked away into a pocket. It’s important to limit any extra distractions, and most extreme sports nuts will not actually have a free hand available to hang onto a video camera.

Seeing is Believing

When you record your very own extreme sports videos, you will have the footage available to watch over and over, and also to finally be able to show your friends and family just what all the excitement is about!

The recording from the helmet cam shows a perspective that, before, could only be experienced by the participant. New gadgets and new technology offer the opportunity to share the experience with everyone.
