Must Have Helmet Cam Feature #3 - Flash Memory-Based Storage That Holds Lots of Video

Flash Memory Storage

A flash memory card is a solid-state electronic flash memory data storage device that offers high record-ability and power-free storage. It is also small in size and comes equipped with rugged environmental specifications. The type of flash memory card recommended for helmet cams is called a Secure Digital (SD) card.

Unfortunately, SD cards are in demand and that means “fake memory card” sales have hit the internet. Experts say thousands of people have been scammed by sellers who are selling inferior or low-capacity cards that have been relabeled and repackaged to look like the real thing.

Beware: You should buy all SD cards from reputable vendors, either online or in-store. Also, SD cards that are not marked “high speed” or “ultra high speed” are probably only ~2MB/s capable.

SD cards currently range in size from 16MB up to 16GB. SD cards also come in different transfer speed ratings. Transfer speed is an important factor if a consumer records high frame-rate motion video or high quality audio tracks. Be aware that many digital camera makers only certify they are 30fps VGA motion video capable when using “high speed” SD cards.

SD cards are perfect for helmet cam recorder systems because they emphasize the camera’s digital capability. Thus, there are no moving parts that can fail from excessive handling or shock and you get your video without any problems!

Recording Modes

A helmet camera should offer a number of different recording options to suit a wide variety of applications. Consumers should familiarize themselves with the basic recording modes and settings so that they can choose the recording method that is best suited for their needs.

Ideally, a helmet cam & DVR system should have two different recording modes, both of which should be configured via the Settings menu on the main user interface.

1. The first mode is the Standard Start/Stop function. In this mode, the user presses REC and the cam starts recording on the SD card until either the card is full or the user stops recording.

2. The second recording mode is called Loop Record. This unique, special recording mode helps to save space on the SD card by allowing the user to save individual video clips for a pre-set length. This allows the SD card to retain only the best footage.

Extra Tip: “Remaining Storage Reminder”. This feature is helpful because it lets you select when a to get a reminder based on the percentage of remaining storage (15%, 10% or 5%) left. This prevents you from accidentally using up the memory before you get to that final trick or jump or whatever that you were working up to.
